I've written frequently about Hollywood's penchant for releasing two movies on the same topic. Last year, I cited "Megamind" and "Despicable Me" as near-doubles.
Well, brace yourselves, because 2011 already has an even more egregious example: "No Strings Attached" and "Friends with Benefits."
"No Strings Attached" has the advantage of coming first. The film, which stars Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, debuts Jan. 21.
This is the logline: "A guy and girl try to keep their relationship strictly physical, but it's not long before they learn that they want something more."
"Friends with Benefits," starring Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake, doesn't hit theaters until July 22.
Logline: "The relationship between two friends gets complicated when they decide to get romantic."
Adding to the confusion: The poster for "No Strings Attached" includes the phrase, "Friendship has its benefits."
I suppose "Friends with Benefits" should fire back by having its poster say, "Strings shall not be attached."
